It won't be what you expected.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been in love with books. As a child, it was the unmistakable smell of the library. Today, the local bookstore is almost always my first stop whenever I arrive in a new city. I’ve been designing book covers and typesetting pages ever since my first role at Wangels Publishing back in 1988. Naturally, a book rarely comes alone—there are often posters, ads, websites, packaging, image editing, and illustrations to go with it. I enjoy every single bit of it, but the book itself always remains the beating heart of what I do.
I have a soft spot for simple solutions—the kind that flip perspective on its head or deliver an unexpected twist. Nothing beats the moment a client exclaims, “That’s exactly what I had in mind!” Reaching that point takes listening and genuine curiosity. It takes communication, warmth, humor, agility, playfulness, patience, and the willingness to start over from scratch without sulking. That’s why I love this work: those happen to be my core strengths. Alongside, of course, a mastery of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. When it comes to illustration, though, I still prefer working by hand. No piece of technology can ever replace the tactile joy—and physical mess—of real art supplies. Cleaning it up in Photoshop afterwards is the easy part.
As a kid, I was constantly drawing and telling stories. For years, whenever I saw vivid, bright colors, my immediate instinct was to eat them. Later on, when choosing a career path, I explored a few different detours. After a couple of years, the answer became clear: I simply needed to do what felt effortless, playful, and natural. Full circle back to books and color. Who would have guessed it could be that simple?
