De elskende gives voice to people in the circle around Karen Blixen. Through their own stories, their struggles, loyalties, desires and wounds, Blixen appears indirectly — not as the centre of the narrative, but as a figure glimpsed through others.

The cover had to hold that same doubleness. Not a definitive portrait, but a mask, a reflection, a myth seen from the side. It should be hard to read: romantic and unsettling at once.

Among the available images of Karen Blixen, I found a portrait where she performs one of her many self-created disguises — this time as the moon. The image has both comic and eerie undertones, and became the key to the cover.

I drew the title lettering by hand to push that further. Are the ornamental lines romantic flourishes, or something closer to creeping tendrils? Against the black background, the cover turns seductive and difficult to place.

For the American edition, published as The Lovers, the author was clear about why the cover had to change. The American market is far more competitive, and it has less patience for the peculiar. A cover that asks to be puzzled over is a harder thing to sell there. It had to be easier to decode.

That is a fair argument, and not one a designer gets to wave away. The task became to keep the darkness and the theatre, but to give the reader a way in. The pair of lions came from the book itself. The result is a companion to the Danish cover rather than a translation of it.
