Graphic design / Cover concept

Den første og de følgende cirkler is a collection of philosophical and retrospective essays about moving in circles and patterns of connection. The book reflects on a world that has become smaller, more interdependent and harder to think of as separate parts.

The texts do not circle around one single theme, but move through a series of loosely connected ideas. That made the design task less about illustrating a subject and more about finding a visual structure for movement, relation and shared direction.

I developed two different visual directions. One explored the author’s idea of moving in circles away from an origin point and out into the wider world. The other focused on the thought that, in a smaller and more connected world, collective action becomes both possible and necessary.

My own favourite was not the one that was chosen. That happens. But it also says something useful about the process: a cover is not only a visual argument, it is a negotiation between tone, clarity, ambition and the author’s sense of the book.

What I still like about the discarded cover is its spatial quality. The circles become a graphic composition, but also a kind of map. The small flags are almost a minor detail — and yet they carry the most important idea on the front: the possibility of a shared, outward movement.
